We have four bedrooms upstairs and currently have 6 people living in those rooms. After a bit of brainstorming we realized that the guest room was going to have to begin being permanently occupied. No, we are not getting a nanny, but we are planning on moving the girls in there. Since Jeremy's parents live so far away, we wanted to make sure we had a place for them to stay as well.
Our basement was not finished when we bought the house and Jeremy has always wanted to finish a basement, so why not kill two birds with one stone. With the help of his brother, Adam, the basement is now framed. We only have a couple of preliminary pictures, but we wanted to share those as well. We'll keep you updated as the process continues. While it probably won't progress very quickly over the warm summer months when there is lots to do outside, it will hopefully provide a lot of work on rainy days.

When all is said and done, there will be a store room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a large TV/play area. We are still a long while from it all being complete, but getting started is half the battle. The framing is nearly complete and Jeremy hopes to finish that this week. Then on to wiring, plumbing, HVAC, and dry-walling. We originally were thinking we would aim for September completion, but we set a more reasonable goal of being done before Christmas. At any rate we don't need the room immediately, so it will be nice to take our time and get it done right.
We thought they looked really great and we were excited to plant. We were also excited about the plants we started inside. The plants did well for the first month or two, but then we lost our entire crop of lettuce and spinach to a hungry deer. Bugs took out our squash, zucchini, and melons about mid-July. And the corn... well it didn't really establish solid roots.

Needless to say - with the exception of TONS of cherry tomatoes, the garden was kind of a bust. But we won't call it a loss, because we gained a lot of information. Jeremy learned about safe pesticides. We learned that our irrigation system needed LOTS of work. But most importantly, we learned that four feet of chicken wire is a laughable amount for deer. Thus begins gardening 201.

We begin this years gardening season by setting up a new fence. Though it isn't complete, it is going to be 6 feet tall. This won't completely prevent deer from getting in, but it is a lot tougher than chicken wire.
On the CalendarJust like last year, the spring season has brought on a number of projects for our family. Just like clockwork, spring hit in March and projects begin taking up loads of time.

Since we moved in, our backyard has been a mix of mud, weeds, and some crabgrass. Needless to say, it wasn't the best place for having friends and family over.

We had always wanted a patio in the back yard, so we had the good folks at CL Construction give us a hand. Once the rain let up long enough to frame and pour, we had a place to entertain and where the girls can ride their bikes.
Though these pictures don't really do it justice, we wanted to get some posted. Jeremy has all the beds set up to be self watering, but when he tried to start the water tonight, we discovered that the hoses do not stay on securely as advertised. He is going to pick up a few things tomorrow and see if he can get it working.Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191771627771518621.post-88992920921920144422012-04-30T20:55:00.003-07:002012-04-30T21:02:05.425-07:00The WallAny psych major can tell you that putting up walls is a bad thing. However, Jeremy has a thing for building retaining walls. At the old house, he (along with some help from brothers and brothers-in-law) build a wall across our entire backyard. At our new house, he (with a lot of help from his dad) is putting in not one, not two, but three walls to turn a big slope next to our walkout basement into a terraced yard. With the help of a little tractor that we borrowed from Jeremy's Grandpa, we were able to get the first two tiers done. Unfortunately, we underestimated how big we would need to make it and thus ran out of blocks. Jeremy is hoping to complete it soon, but here is the current state.
With some help from a small tractor, we were able to get the beds installed and filled. In between you can see the mulch that we are using. We went with a hardwood mulch to help defray the costs as cedar can be expensive. However, we will soon add some cedar mulch around the beds to help with pest control and to give the garden a nice aroma.

We have been loving our new house. We haven't done a ton of things, but we have added pictures to the walls, curtains over most windows, and a few other small touches. We are working to put the finishing touches on the master bedroom (we have a new bedroom set, a nice reading couch, new lamps, and our curtains). We've partially finished the prayer room: laying carpet, hanging some pictures and shelves, etc. It is hard to believe that a year ago we were painting...

Now that spring is upon (and our little addition is soon to arrive) we are working on some outdoor projects. We hope to post soon with news of our revamped garden, our retaining walls, and a brand new lawn. However, we will be very busy over the next few weeks, so forgive us if we are late with posting them.Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191771627771518621.post-64454812628994424832011-06-15T09:05:00.000-07:002011-06-15T09:09:43.963-07:00MovingFor many of the followers of this blog, you might have noticed an extended period with no posts. That is because we have been moving in. A few important date bullets:

Over Memorial Day weekend, May 27th - 30th, we moved out of our apartment and into our house.

We spent our first night here on Friday, May 27th.

Jeremy put up our mailbox just in time on Monday, May 30th. We had already started forwarding our mail. Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

We finally closed on the house Thursday, June 9th.

We've not been able to blog since moving in because until Friday, June 10th we were without Internet. After hours of getting the runaround from Windstream we decided to go with Affordable Internet Solutions. They put a small receiver on our roof which communicates with the water tower and gets us decent speed for being in the country.

We planted our first garden at the new house on Tuesday, June 14th.

The girls love the house and are enjoying being "country girls". They have parodied John Denver's Thank God I'm a Country Boy and enjoy singing that.

We're hoping to get some pictures posted soon to show all the fun stuff we've been doing, but we have been moving constantly since the big move (and even before that) so be patient and we'll have more fun stuff for you.

Overall, we've had a few issues, but we are loving our house and are starting to really feel at home there.

God is so good to us.Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191771627771518621.post-14802714985269945932011-05-24T12:44:00.001-07:002011-05-24T12:47:12.383-07:00All decked out...
Despite wind, sprinkling and all out storming, Jeremy build our deck with the help of his dad and brother.

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; In the kitchen, there is a bar area with 3 hanging lights over it. At one time, we had picked out the perfect light covers to hang on the bottom. However, when we went to install them, they were the wrong size. So, we went back to the store and picked out 3 that we liked, hoping that once we installed them, the choice would be obvious. We now have finished the staining the windows and sliding door and painting all the rooms. This week they are installing the wood laminate floors, the interior doors, and the trim. We are also expecting a visit from the plumber and electrician.

Our most recent update is that we now have a driveway and sidewalk. Yesterday they framed and poured the drive, sidewalk, and a little pad on the north side. It is really starting to come together! By the end of this week we should see some major progress.

We also started working on planting some trees. We have 28 trees to plant, so we've got our work cut out for us, but we made a lot of progress last night in getting them all staked out and dug. We have to build some small cages for them - we don't want them to get away! Just kidding. It is actually to keep the deer and rabbits from destroying them. We are hoping that we can take really good care of them and have a nice little wind break in 5-10 years. We'll try to finish planting them tonight, but we have 28 cages to build, so it might take a little while.

On another note, when they did the dirt work in front of the house (for the drive), they also leveled out our back yard. This is exciting for both us and our girls as we will soon be able to get their play-set moved out set up. This will also be exciting for us because the girls will have something to keep them busy while we work.

Jeremy is starting to get anxious about planting the lawn, but we can't do that until we have running water. We have our well, but trying to get the plumber and electrician coordinated to get this all set up has been a tough job. We are hoping to have at least some running water by the end of the week. In the mean time, we haul it from the apartment in ice cream buckets or milk jugs with the occasional 5 gallon bucket.

More updates to come! We hope to have pictures of the floor plus a poll coming in the next week so stay tuned!!Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191771627771518621.post-11581177383152592982011-04-20T04:54:00.000-07:002011-04-20T04:54:54.042-07:00Choosing PaintA word of advice from someone who knows:
When choosing paint for you next painting project, please allow us to recommend Valspar paints. In particular, their signature series. This is something we are very passionate about. We have tried a number of paints over the years that we have been married and what we have found is that Valspar Signature Series is head and shoulders above other paint. It coats better, it doesn't run as easily, and it will cover almost anything in two coats. It is a little more expensive than other paints, but you really get what you pay for. And plus, with other paints, you end up applying more paint to get the same coverage, so you end up spending just as much.

We've used Behr and Pittsburgh, and those aren't too bad, but other brands, in particular Olympic and Dutchboy have left us wanting.

We tried to save a few bucks by going with a plain white Olympic, but we found that it didn't coat well, it was runny, and it took two gallons to do just one coat on our closets. We will be returning the third can and getting a good quality paint to finish it.

So when you get ready for your painting project, stop into Lowes and pick up a gallon or two of Valspar Signature Series and your project will be much more satisfying.Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191771627771518621.post-90597612768858019512011-04-20T04:44:00.000-07:002011-04-20T04:44:56.921-07:00Painting - Take 2
The painting is winding down. We now only have the laundry room and a second coat on the closets left to go. We are hoping to get those finished up in the next couple of days. On another note, our power has officially been trenched in as of yesterday! That line still needs to be hooked up, so our temporary line is still the "hot" wire, but soon they will get that changed.

Some of the colors are hard to see on a picture - the flash makes it difficult to show the real color. You'll have to come see for yourself once it is finished. We are working hard on the master bedroom and girls room as those rooms are getting a special paint job.Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191771627771518621.post-71712333033749022092011-04-13T20:31:00.000-07:002011-04-13T20:31:09.920-07:00Cabinets
We had a little difficulty picking out our kitchen cupboards. Jeremy wanted something kind of dark - Kati didn't wan't a lot of grain to the wood. We settled on birch with a briarwood stain. Tuesday evening, a guy showed up and started hanging our cabinets. We were very excited with how well they turned out. By the way - we intentionally didn't paint the bottom of this wall as it will be covered with cabinets as well.

It consisted of the 5 of us, Jeremy's mom - Patti, Jeremy's Grandma - Karen, Jeremy's brother - Adam, Jeremy's cousins - Meg and Melissa. Another of Jeremy's cousins, Abbey, watched the girls all day - they wore her out. Kati's brother-in-law brought his boys out to help with some staining as well. While we don't have the water to flush a toilet, it now has a place to go. Also, the new siding has arrived and they have two sides done.
The drywallers have hung all the drywall, but they can't start mudding because it is too cold. Did someone miss the memo that we are almost in April and it is supposed to be spring time? At any rate, yesterday our electrician got a temporary line into the house so that we can have power enough to run a few small heaters to warm up the inside of the house enough that the mud will dry. Fortunately, he didn't hook up the main heater as that would have gotten drywall dust in the system and made a mess for us over the next few years. So we are currently waiting for the house to warm up (or the weather - whichever comes first).Jeremy Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17075013835536984280noreply@blogger.com0
